We can't be late on No-Late day!
Wilder the Trickster, Day 85.
( Ep. 4, 00:17-7:08 )
- Alarms sound across the town and Mako wakes up in a panic, throws all her clothes on, eats toast, while telling Ryuko that they've got to hurry!! It's 4am but apparently they're late!
- Ryuko's uniform is being washed by Mako's mom; she says they'll bring it to her and that they should all hurry along -- Mako pulls Ryuko out of the door as her family waves to them.
- "Senketsu? You gave your uniform a name? You must be pretty lonely to do that! All the more reason to go to school, there's plenty of friends there!"
- They throw themselves into a mass of people: hundreds of students all heading in the same direction. Ryuko doesn't understand, Mako doesn't really explain it well.
- Then out of nowhere houses explode and a giant platform appears?? Ira Gamagoori is standing on it: one of the school's Elite Four, and the head of the Disciplinary Committee.
- Gamagoori explains that No-Late Day is held once a semester: No-Star students are meant to pass traps laid for them by the Disciplinary Committee in order to "whip them into shape." If they don't get to their homeroom by 8:30am, they are expelled on the spot.
- BUT THEN GAMAGOORI IS SCANDALIZED BY RYUKO STILL WEARING HER PJs and demands to know what sort of mockery she's trying to make of this institution!! IT IS A MORTAL INSULT.
- Except -- Mako hops up on the platform to come toe to toe with Gamagoori -- it's not. No, because Ryuko was asleep until just now, and it's perfectly normal for people to sleep in pajamas, so why is Gamagoori so mad? Doesn't he wear pajamas when he sleeps, isn't that normal? (He does not, he replies -- he sleeps in the nude. Mako swiftly tells him to put some pants on, because he may fall ill if he does that...he replies with a baffled "O-oh.")
- "What is your name?" "Second Year Class K, Mankanshoku ****! The pattern on my favorite pajamas is one Mt. Fuji, two bald eagles, and three eggplants!" "Mankanshoku...I'll be sure to remember that. MATOI! I couldn't care less what you're wearing right now!"
- And then he reveals the course and it's full of spikes and terror. Spikes and terror and death.
- HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS TRAVERSE THE COURSE. Highlights include steep stairs that turn into a ramp at the last minute, sending hundreds tumbling to what is probably their deaths (or at least injury). Mako gets thrown up onto the checkpoint, marking 1/999 complete! But other things include people impaled to death for trying to cheat the system, barbed wire fences, and gruesome sights.
- "999? There's more of them than usual!"
- Ryuko resolves to get through all of them, and waves them along. The memory ends before the ~mysterious figure~ jumps up on them.
Effects:
- Unlocked: knowledge that she is a No-Star student who lives in a very tiny home with her relatively poor parents, + 1 brother! Also that her mom is a housewife. 'u' Thanks mom you're a bro.
- Unlocked: knowledge of Ira Gamagoori, chairman of the Disciplinary Committee. Mako isn't afraid of him!!
+500 concern that everyone in Henwen wear pajamas to bed
+100 weirded out a little that Ryuko named her uniform
+1000 "My school is weird but it's fine!"
- Also knowledge that this has happened before. This isn't the first time she's experienced No-Late Day, which means at least once before she's gone through something like this and survived.
