Using a hostage is a classic strategy.
(Episode 1; 16:00-End)
Mako's grabbed from her house by the Disciplinary Committee before the sun rises -- and strapped to an upside down X-shaped monstrosity. They inform her that because she was the only one who spoke to the transfer student, she's going to be executed unless the new transfer shows her face. However, Mako doesn't really seem concerned about that, but instead is worried because everyone can see her underwear. Iyan.
The boxing club leader brings out a vat of boiling hot oil, showing it off to the crowd of students -- if Ryuko doesn't show up, Mako is going to be dipped in it. They make an example of a shrimp for emphasis, turning it a delicious golden brown. Mako again doesn't seem concerned for her life: she's worried that if she gets too much oil on her uniform, it'll turn see-through! And that would be terrible!
From out of the crowd, Ryuko flies through the air, wearing a stupidly long cape -- and then leaps onto the X-platform, cuts Mako free with a gigantic half of a scissor, puts her under her arm and hops off, just before the X crashes into the oil. Ryuko sits Mako down and begins to fight the captain of the Boxing Club. As the Captain's screwdriver punch gets caught in Ryuko's cape, it rips away, leaving Ryuko in a very revealing outfit.
Mako cheers for Ryuko as she totally kicks the Captain's butt (though Mako thinks that Ryuko actually knows how to box, when really she's cheating :'D). RYUKO WINS. And challenges Kiryin Satsuki, the Student Body President herself!
